Extract Audio on Any Device

On Windows 10/11

Windows has no built-in way to extract audio from video. You would need to install FFmpeg or a video editor. Convertio.com lets you extract audio instantly in your browser — drag in an MP4, get an MP3 back. No software installation required.

On Mac

QuickTime Player can export audio from MOV files, but the process is limited and slow. For MP4, MKV, or AVI files, there is no native macOS solution. Our online converter handles all video formats and produces a standard MP3 file compatible with every device.

On iPhone / iPad

iOS has no built-in audio extraction capability. Third-party apps exist but most require in-app purchases. Open our converter in Safari, upload your video, and download the extracted MP3 — no app installation needed.

On Android

Android does not provide native audio extraction tools. Our web-based converter works in Chrome for Android — upload your video file and download the MP3 directly to your phone's Downloads folder.

What is MP4?

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the universal video container format. It stores video (typically H.264 or H.265), audio (typically AAC), and metadata in a single file. MP4 is the standard format for YouTube, Instagram, iPhone recordings, and virtually every video platform.

The audio track inside an MP4 file is usually AAC at 128-256 kbps. Some MP4 files contain AC-3 (Dolby) or even MP3 audio tracks. When you "convert MP4 to MP3," you are extracting this audio track and re-encoding it as MP3.

What is MP3?

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) is the most widely supported audio format in the world. Developed in the 1990s by the Fraunhofer Institute, MP3 uses lossy compression to reduce audio file sizes by 80-90% compared to uncompressed WAV.

MP3 plays on every device ever made with audio capability: phones, computers, car stereos, Bluetooth speakers, smart watches, and even alarm clocks. At 192 kbps, MP3 provides quality that is transparent (indistinguishable from the source) for most listeners.

Understanding Audio Extraction Quality

When you convert MP4 to MP3, the video track is discarded entirely — only the audio is processed. The audio inside most MP4 files is encoded as AAC at 128-256 kbps. Converting this to MP3 involves decoding the AAC and re-encoding as MP3.

Since both AAC and MP3 are lossy codecs, this is a lossy-to-lossy transcode. A small amount of quality is theoretically lost in the re-encoding process. In practice, at 192 kbps MP3, the difference is inaudible to most listeners.

Our converter uses LAME MP3 encoder at VBR quality level 2 (approximately 190 kbps average), which produces transparent quality for the vast majority of content. The output MP3 file is typically 90-95% smaller than the input MP4 because the video data is removed.

Why Extract Audio from Video?

Save music from videos

Extract the audio track from music videos, concert recordings, or live performances. The MP3 file plays in any music app and takes up a fraction of the storage space.

Create podcast audio

Recorded a video podcast or interview? Extract the audio for podcast distribution platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts that require audio-only files.

Lecture and meeting audio

Video recordings of lectures, meetings, and presentations are large and inconvenient for review. Extract the audio to listen on the go — while commuting, exercising, or doing chores.

Background music extraction

Need the background music or sound effects from a video? Extract the full audio track as MP3 for use in your own projects, presentations, or playlists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Re-encoding from AAC (inside MP4) to MP3 involves a generation loss since both are lossy codecs. At 192 kbps MP3, the difference is negligible for most listeners. For zero loss, you can extract the original AAC stream without re-encoding using tools like FFmpeg.
192 kbps is sufficient for most video audio. Most MP4 files contain AAC audio at 128-256 kbps, so there is no benefit to exceeding the source quality. Our converter uses VBR quality level 2 (~190 kbps) for optimal quality-to-size ratio.
Yes. Our converter accepts MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, WebM, WMV, FLV, and other video formats. The audio track is extracted and converted to MP3 regardless of the video container format.
Audio extraction is fast — typically 15 seconds to 1 minute. Since only the audio track is processed (video is discarded), it is much faster than video-to-video conversion.
Yes. Convertio.com offers free MP4 to MP3 conversion with no watermarks, no registration, and no email required. Upload your file, convert, and download. Files are encrypted during transfer and automatically deleted within 2 hours.
