What is CR2?

CR2 (Canon RAW Version 2) is Canon's proprietary RAW image format used by the majority of Canon DSLR cameras manufactured between 2004 and 2018. CR2 files contain unprocessed sensor data captured directly from the camera's image sensor — no white balance, sharpening, or compression has been applied. This gives photographers maximum flexibility to adjust exposure, color balance, and other parameters during post-processing.

CR2 files are typically 20–60 MB per photo depending on the camera's resolution (from 10 MP to 50.6 MP). They store 14-bit color data per channel, providing over 16,000 brightness levels compared to JPEG's 256. Newer Canon cameras (EOS R mirrorless system) use the CR3 format, which offers better compression but contains the same raw sensor data.

What is JPG?

JPG (JPEG) is the world's most widely used image format. Published as a standard in 1992 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, JPG uses lossy DCT-based compression to reduce file sizes dramatically while retaining acceptable visual quality. A 30 MB CR2 file typically becomes a 3–8 MB JPG at high quality settings.

JPG supports 8-bit color (16.7 million colors in sRGB) and adjustable quality levels. Its defining strength is universal compatibility: every device, browser, app, and service created in the last three decades can open and display JPG files. When you need to share, print, upload, or embed photos, JPG is the safe choice.

Why Convert CR2 to JPG?

Sharing & compatibility

CR2 files cannot be opened by most devices, browsers, or apps. Converting to JPG makes your Canon photos viewable everywhere — email, messaging, social media, websites, and print services all accept JPG.

File size reduction

A single CR2 file can be 25–60 MB. Converting to high-quality JPG reduces this to 3–8 MB — a 5–10x reduction. This matters for email attachments, cloud storage, and web uploads where file size limits apply.

Printing

Most print services (Shutterfly, Walgreens Photo, online print labs) require JPG or TIFF. CR2 files are almost never accepted directly. Converting to high-quality JPG preserves resolution and color for excellent prints.

Web & social media

No website or social media platform accepts CR2 uploads. Instagram, Facebook, WordPress, Shopify, and every CMS require standard formats. JPG is universally supported for web image uploads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Converting from RAW to JPG applies lossy compression, so there is some data loss. However, at JPG quality 90+, the visual difference is imperceptible. The RAW file contains more data for editing flexibility, but the final JPG output looks excellent for sharing and printing.
Yes. Our online converter processes CR2 files in your browser — no software installation needed. You can also use free desktop software like RawTherapee or Canon's Digital Photo Professional.
CR2 is Canon's older RAW format used by most Canon DSLRs (up to around 2018). CR3 is the newer format used by Canon's mirrorless EOS R cameras. Both contain unprocessed sensor data; CR3 adds better compression. Our converter supports both.
CR2 file sizes vary by camera: 20–30 MB for 20 MP cameras, 30–45 MB for 30 MP models, and 45–60 MB for high-resolution cameras like the Canon 5DS R (50.6 MP).
Yes. Upload multiple CR2 files to our converter. For very large batches (1,000+), desktop software like RawTherapee or Adobe Lightroom may be more efficient.
