What is NEF?

NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's proprietary RAW image format used by all Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras. NEF files contain unprocessed sensor data with 12–14-bit color depth, preserving the full dynamic range and color information captured by the sensor.

NEF files range from 20 to 80 MB depending on the camera model. Nikon's D850 (45.7 MP) produces ~50 MB NEF files, while the Z9 (45.7 MP) files are similar. The format is used across the entire Nikon lineup: D3xxx, D5xxx, D7xxx, D8xx DSLR series and Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8, Z9, Zf mirrorless cameras.

What is JPG?

JPG (JPEG) is the universal image format, published in 1992. JPG uses lossy DCT-based compression to dramatically reduce file sizes. A 50 MB NEF becomes a 5–10 MB JPG at high quality.

JPG's strength is universal compatibility: every device, browser, application, and service supports it. For sharing, printing, web uploads, and email, JPG is the standard choice.

Why Convert NEF to JPG?

Sharing & compatibility

NEF files require Nikon-specific or professional RAW software to open. Converting to JPG makes your photos viewable on any device — email clients, messaging apps, social media, and print services all handle JPG natively.

File size reduction

NEF files from modern Nikon cameras can be 40–80 MB. Converting to JPG reduces this to 5–10 MB, making photos practical to share via email and cloud services.

Printing

Print services universally require JPG or TIFF. NEF files are not accepted by consumer photo labs. Converting to JPG at quality 92 preserves all the detail needed for excellent prints up to large poster sizes.

Web & social media

No website accepts NEF uploads. Converting to JPG is required for Instagram, Facebook, portfolio sites, WordPress, and any web-based platform.

NEF contains unprocessed sensor data with 12–14 bit color depth and full dynamic range, offering vastly more editing flexibility. JPG is already processed and compressed to 8-bit. For final sharing, JPG is fine; for editing, NEF is superior.
Yes. Windows 10/11 can display NEF thumbnails natively. Free software like RawTherapee or our online converter can process NEF files without Nikon-specific tools.
Use quality 92–95 for the JPG output. Our converter uses camera white balance and sRGB color space by default, producing natural-looking results with minimal quality loss.
