What is a RAW File?

A RAW file contains unprocessed sensor data captured directly from a digital camera's image sensor. Unlike JPG, which applies white balance, sharpening, noise reduction, and compression in-camera, a RAW file preserves the original data exactly as the sensor recorded it. This gives photographers maximum flexibility to adjust exposure, color, and other parameters during post-processing.

RAW files are typically 20–80 MB per photo depending on the camera's resolution and sensor size. They store 12–14 bits of color data per channel (4,096–16,384 brightness levels), compared to JPG's 8 bits (256 levels). Each camera manufacturer uses their own proprietary RAW format — Canon uses CR2/CR3, Nikon uses NEF, Sony uses ARW, and so on. Adobe's DNG format is an open alternative that some cameras support natively.

What is JPG?

JPG (JPEG) is the world's most widely used image format. Published as a standard in 1992 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, JPG uses lossy DCT-based compression to reduce file sizes dramatically while retaining acceptable visual quality. A 30 MB RAW file typically becomes a 3–8 MB JPG at high quality settings.

JPG supports 8-bit color (16.7 million colors in sRGB) and adjustable quality levels. Its defining strength is universal compatibility: every device, browser, app, and service created in the last three decades can open and display JPG files. When you need to share, print, upload, or embed photos, JPG is the safe choice that works everywhere without any special software.

Why Convert RAW to JPG?

Share without editing software

RAW files require specialized software like Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, or RawTherapee to open. Most people you share photos with don't have these tools. Converting to JPG makes your images instantly viewable on any phone, tablet, computer, or smart TV — no special software needed.

Quick preview & sorting

After a shoot, you may have hundreds of RAW files to review. Converting to JPG lets you quickly preview, sort, and select your best shots using any image viewer or file manager. This is especially useful when you need to deliver a client preview before final editing.

Social media & email

No social media platform or email service accepts RAW file uploads. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and every messaging app require standard formats. JPG is universally supported for photo uploads across all platforms, and its compressed file size makes uploads fast even on mobile connections.

Printing & web publishing

Print services (Shutterfly, Walgreens Photo, online print labs) and web platforms (WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace) require JPG or PNG. RAW files are almost never accepted directly. High-quality JPG preserves enough detail for excellent prints up to poster sizes while keeping file sizes manageable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our converter supports all major camera RAW formats: Canon CR2 and CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW and SR2, Olympus ORF, Panasonic RW2, Fujifilm RAF, Adobe DNG, Pentax PEF, and generic .RAW files. This covers cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus/OM System, Panasonic/Lumix, Fujifilm, Pentax, Leica, and Hasselblad.
JPG uses lossy compression, so there is some data reduction compared to the original RAW file. However, at high quality settings (90+), the visual difference is imperceptible for sharing and printing. RAW files contain 12–14 bits of color data per channel, while JPG uses 8 bits — but for final output, JPG at high quality produces excellent results that are indistinguishable from RAW to the human eye.
Yes. Our converter preserves EXIF metadata from the original RAW file, including camera model, exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), date taken, GPS coordinates (if present), and lens information. This metadata is embedded in the output JPG file and can be read by any EXIF viewer.
Yes. Our online converter processes RAW files directly — no software installation needed. Simply upload your RAW file, choose your quality settings, and download the JPG. This is ideal for quick conversions when you don't have access to Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, Capture One, or other editing software.
RAW files are typically 5–10x larger than high-quality JPGs. A 24-megapixel camera produces RAW files of 25–40 MB depending on the manufacturer, while the same image as a high-quality JPG is 3–8 MB. Higher-resolution cameras (45–60 MP) produce RAW files of 50–80 MB. Converting to JPG dramatically reduces storage requirements.
For sharing on social media or email, quality 80 is sufficient and produces small file sizes. For printing or archival, use quality 92 (our default) or 100 for maximum detail. The visual difference between 92 and 100 is minimal, but file sizes at 100 are significantly larger. For web publishing, 80–92 offers the best balance of quality and loading speed.
