How Image Resizing Works
When you resize an image, the pixel dimensions change. There are two key operations:
- Downscaling — shrinking an image always looks good because pixel information is merged using Lanczos resampling, producing sharp results.
- Upscaling — enlarging an image requires interpolating new pixels, which can introduce softness. For best results, avoid upscaling beyond 2× the original size.
When the target dimensions have a different aspect ratio than the original, the image is center-cropped: it’s scaled to fill the entire target area, then the edges are trimmed equally from both sides. This ensures the subject stays centered with no black bars.
