Convert AI to PNG on Any Device
On Windows
Opening AI files on Windows normally requires Adobe Illustrator, which costs $22.99/month. Even free alternatives like Inkscape have limited AI support and require installation. Our online converter lets you convert any AI file to PNG directly in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge — no software needed. Upload the file, get a high-resolution PNG in seconds.
On Mac
While macOS Preview can sometimes open AI files, the results are often low-resolution or incomplete, especially for complex vector artwork with effects and gradients. Our online converter processes AI files server-side with full rendering support, producing a high-quality PNG from any Mac browser — Safari, Chrome, or Firefox. No Illustrator subscription required.
On Linux
Linux doesn't run Adobe Illustrator natively. Inkscape can open some AI files, but compatibility varies and complex artwork may not render correctly. Our online converter works from any Linux browser without installing packages. Upload your AI file from Firefox or Chrome, and download a pixel-perfect PNG. Works on Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, or any other distribution.
On Mobile
AI files can't be opened natively on iPhone, iPad, or Android. If a colleague sends you an Illustrator file and you need to view or share it, our converter works directly in your mobile browser. Upload the AI file, convert to PNG, and save the image to your photo library or share it via messaging apps and social media.
What is AI?
AI (Adobe Illustrator Artwork) is the native file format of Adobe Illustrator, the industry-standard vector graphics editor. First introduced in 1987, the AI format has evolved through dozens of Illustrator versions and is the primary format used by graphic designers, illustrators, and brand teams worldwide.
AI files are based on PostScript and PDF specifications. Modern AI files (Illustrator CS and later) are essentially PDF files with additional Illustrator-specific data embedded. They store vector paths, shapes, text, gradients, transparency effects, layers, and embedded raster images. Since AI is a vector format, artwork scales to any size without quality loss.
The main limitation of AI files is that they require Adobe Illustrator or compatible software to open and edit. This makes sharing difficult when recipients don't have Illustrator installed, which is why converting to a universal format like PNG is often necessary.
What is PNG?
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster image format created in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It uses lossless compression, meaning images retain full quality without artifacts. PNG is the standard format for web graphics, screenshots, and images requiring transparency.
PNG supports full alpha-channel transparency, making it ideal for logos, icons, and illustrations that need to be placed on different backgrounds. It uses 24-bit color (16.7 million colors) or 32-bit with alpha channel, preserving the color fidelity of the original artwork.
PNG files are universally supported by every web browser, operating system, image editor, presentation tool, and social media platform. When you convert an AI file to PNG, the result can be opened, viewed, and shared by anyone — no special software needed.

Why Convert AI to PNG?
No Illustrator needed
Adobe Illustrator is expensive ($22.99/month) and not everyone has it installed. When you receive an AI file from a designer and need to view or use the artwork, converting to PNG gives you an image that opens on any device in any application. No subscriptions, no downloads, no compatibility issues.
Web and social media
Websites, social media platforms, and email clients don't support AI files. If you need to use Illustrator artwork on a website, in a blog post, on Instagram, or in an email newsletter, you need a raster format. PNG is the best choice because it preserves transparency and sharp edges — perfect for logos, icons, and illustrations on the web.
Presentations and documents
PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, Word, and Google Docs all support PNG images but cannot embed AI files. Converting your Illustrator artwork to PNG lets you drop it into any presentation or document while preserving the visual quality. At 300 DPI, the output is sharp enough for both screen display and printing.
Client and team sharing
When sharing design proofs, logo variations, or artwork with clients and team members, AI files are impractical — most people can't open them. A high-quality PNG is universally viewable, can be previewed inline in email, and works in every messaging app. Convert to PNG for frictionless sharing while keeping the original AI file for future editing.
