What is EPUB?
EPUB (Electronic Publication) is an open ebook format maintained by the W3C. It is the most widely supported ebook standard, used by Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Nook, and most other e-readers and reading apps — with the notable exception of older Amazon Kindle devices.
EPUB files are essentially packaged HTML and CSS, which means they support reflowable text, embedded images, fonts, chapter navigation, and rich formatting. The content adapts to different screen sizes, making EPUB ideal for reading on phones, tablets, and dedicated e-readers.
EPUB 3, the current version, supports audio, video, JavaScript interactivity, and accessibility features like text-to-speech. Most ebooks purchased from non-Amazon stores are delivered in EPUB format.
What is MOBI?
MOBI (Mobipocket) is the ebook format used by Amazon Kindle devices. Originally developed by Mobipocket SA and later acquired by Amazon in 2005, MOBI became the native format for the entire Kindle ecosystem — the world's most popular e-reader platform.
MOBI files support reflowable text, bookmarks, annotations, dictionary lookup, and the Kindle's built-in features like X-Ray and Word Wise. The format handles embedded images, cover art, and table of contents navigation that integrates seamlessly with the Kindle interface.
While Amazon has been transitioning to the newer KFX/AZW3 formats, MOBI remains the most universally compatible format across all Kindle generations. It is also the format accepted by the Send-to-Kindle email service, making it the easiest way to sideload ebooks onto any Kindle device.

Why Convert EPUB to MOBI?
Kindle compatibility
The primary reason to convert EPUB to MOBI is to read your ebooks on an Amazon Kindle. Older Kindle models (Paperwhite, Oasis, basic Kindle before 2022) do not support EPUB natively. If you have ebooks from non-Amazon sources — public libraries, Project Gutenberg, Humble Bundle, or independent publishers — converting them to MOBI makes them readable on your Kindle.
Send-to-Kindle email
Every Kindle device has a unique email address (e.g., [email protected]). You can email MOBI files to this address, and they appear in your Kindle library automatically, synced across all your devices. This is the easiest way to add personal ebooks to your Kindle without connecting a USB cable. MOBI is the most reliable format for this service.
Consistent reading experience
MOBI files are optimized for the Kindle's rendering engine. Converting EPUB to MOBI ensures that formatting, fonts, line spacing, and page breaks display exactly as intended on your Kindle screen. Kindle features like adjustable font size, dictionary lookup, highlights, and notes work seamlessly with MOBI files.
Offline library
Building a personal ebook library in MOBI format gives you full control over your reading collection. Unlike DRM-locked purchases tied to a specific vendor's app, DRM-free MOBI files can be backed up, shared with family, and read on any Kindle device indefinitely — even without an internet connection or Amazon account.
How to Load MOBI Files on Your Kindle
After converting your EPUB to MOBI, there are several ways to get the file onto your Kindle device:
Via USB cable
Connect your Kindle to your computer with a USB cable. Your Kindle will appear as a removable drive. Open it and navigate to the documents folder. Copy your .mobi file into this folder. Safely eject the Kindle, and the book will appear in your library within a few seconds. This method works offline and with any Kindle model.
Via Send-to-Kindle email
Find your Kindle's email address in Settings → My Account on the device, or in Amazon's Manage Your Content and Devices page. Attach the .mobi file to an email and send it to that address from an approved email. The book will appear in your Kindle library within minutes, synced across all your Kindle devices and apps.
Via Calibre
Calibre is a free, open-source ebook management application. Connect your Kindle via USB, and Calibre will detect it automatically. You can then transfer MOBI files to your device with one click. Calibre also lets you organize your library, edit metadata, and manage collections — useful if you have a large ebook library.
Via Kindle app (mobile/desktop)
On Android, you can open a .mobi file directly with the Kindle app. On iOS and desktop, use the Send-to-Kindle email method or Amazon's Send to Kindle desktop application. The desktop app lets you drag and drop .mobi files, and they sync to all your Kindle devices and apps via your Amazon account.
